Tips for applying
We’d like to offer you some hints & tips on the application process. We understand that you are pushed for time, and that you’ve probably got at least a few more of these websites to visit, so we’ll make things simple. Here are our top 5 hints and tips to help you on your way to a successful application:
- Don’t submit your application without reading it through and checking it twenty times for spelling and grammatical mistakes. It will also help if you ask someone else to read it through too. You will lose credibility if you can’t display a high level of attention to detail.
- Before you start working on the application, do your research and think carefully about whether Shoosmiths is where you would like to work. Application forms take a long time to complete and we are looking for people who are 100% sure that a large national commercial law firm is where they would like to work. Also, we’re looking for evidence that you have done your research, but it’s a real no-no to just re-hash parts of the corporate website.
- Consider how the majority of people would answer the questions on our application form and then try to do something different – but remember, we want you to stand out from the crowd without looking weird!
- Make a concerted effort to tell us about your extra-curricular activities and anything else that will set you apart from the crowd. You don’t need to have done something really extreme, just try to think of examples of what else you have done outside of work and study. This could include volunteering, sports activities, hobbies, etc. Make sure not to stray into ‘personal’ territory - consider what is and isn’t appropriate for a job application.
- Don’t submit any information without being able to explain why you’ve included it and what it shows us about you. We’re not mind-readers and we really do need you to spell it out to us.
All that remains is for us to wish you success in your jobhunting!
