Shoosmiths helps pave way for regeneration scheme

02 April 2009

Shoosmiths property specialists have helped pave the way for a major town centre regeneration project.

Partner and property litigation specialist Darren Clegg and compulsory purchase specialist Heidi Slater advised Cannock Chase District Council on a compulsory purchase order (CPO) crucial to the redevelopment of Hednesford town centre, in Staffordshire.

The Hednesford Gateway Scheme will feature a discount food store, several retail units, and an extended car park.

As well as advising the district council on the process, procedure and documentation for making the CPO, Shoosmiths helped the local authority prepare for a public inquiry into the project, but this was later deemed unnecessary, when all remaining objectors to the CPO withdrew their objections.

Darren Clegg said: “Before objectors to the scheme had their concerns answered, we were headed for a public inquiry, and so had to advise the client on that basis.

“We also had to prepare complex public inquiry documents at short notice, but ultimately we were able to help the district council avoid the need for an inquiry.”

Shoosmiths also worked closely with the scheme’s developer, St Modwen Developments.
