Welcome for Euro-wide trade mark fee cut

Europe-wide business are to have protecting their intellectual property (IP) made cheaper, in a move welcomed by Shoosmiths.

The national law firm called it ‘great news’ for organisations wanting to protect their IP in the recession.

Fees for Community Trade Marks (CTMs) filed on-line will be cut from €1,600 to €900 from 1 May – a €700 saving.

The fee reduction for CTMs – which are valid across all 27 European Union member states – has been introduced earlier than anticipated.

In addition, under transitional arrangements, the current €850 registration fee will not be charged on new applications filed between now and the end of April.

Shoosmiths associate and IP specialist Tracey Huxley said: “The process has been simplified for applicants by having only a single fee, rather than two split between application and registration. The registry anticipates marks to be registered much more quickly as a result.”

She urged: “Anyone thinking of filing a CTM should do so this month, as they will effectively receive a discount of more than 50% of the current fee, and for less than the new fee when it is introduced.”
 
Huxley, who is a registered trade mark agent, said the specialist knowledge of Shoosmiths’ IP team, coupled with the fee reduction, meant businesses could apply for and register Euro-wide trade marks more effectively, as well as cheaper.
