IT legal advice for leading health research body

15 March 2010

Shoosmiths has recently provided IT legal advice for medical research funding body Wellcome Trust.

Wellcome Trust is an independent charity funding research to improve human and animal health.

Shoosmiths partner and IT specialist Michelle Sherwood said: “Because of the potential value of an IT contract, Wellcome Trust wanted an external review of it, and asked us.

“We’ve since carried out a high level review of a professional services agreement, and a software and maintenance agreement.”

Sherwood said: “I hope we can develop what is a nascent relationship, and do more in the future. It would be good, too, to expand that beyond IT and into commercial contract work in general.”

Wellcome Trust senior in-house lawyer Eleanor Boddington said: “We’ve been very happy with the work Shoosmiths has done so far, and this has encouraged us to give further instructions.

“Wellcome has its own team of in-house lawyers but there are occasions where it makes sense for us to outsource work for example where the value or risk of the contract is high or where specialist advice is needed.  Wellcome works with a range of external legal providers and we would certainly consider working with Shoosmiths again for certain types of work.”

Established in 1936 and with an endowment of around £13billion, Wellcome Trust is the UK's largest non-government source of biomedical research funds.
