New work as RP presentations prove a big hit

22 July 2010

Shoosmiths has won new work after close to 100 influencers attended presentations aimed at helping registered providers (RPs) tackle leasehold and shared ownership issues.

Five events hosted at the national law firm’s Birmingham office covered issues including shared ownership leases, service charges, section 20 consultation, and regulation.

A fifth was added after the first four proved hugely popular, and the firm is now acting for several new clients in this area, having received instructions as a direct result of the presentations.

The presentations were part of Shoosmiths’ new Leasehold & Shared Ownership Forum, launched earlier this year to help RPs tackle these issues and make sure they get processes right.

The firm’s Social Housing team believes leasehold and shared ownership management threatens unwary RPs with holes in their budgets and tattered financial plans if they fail to follow the correct processes, carrying out improvement works, third party services contracting and taking enforcement action to recover service charge arrears.

Partner and social housing specialist Yetunde Dania said: “When we launched the Forum we were confident it would be useful for RPs, but little did we imagine just how popular the concept and presentations would be.

“In fact, the presentations have been such a success that we hope to make them an annual feature of the Forum, which will definitely remain and form a key part of our offering to RPs and we have already noticed an increase of enquiries and instructions received.”

The five events were entitled:
• Shared ownership leases: Evolution or revolution?
• Service charges: Can't pay, won't pay
• Section 20 Consultation: Pitfalls and how to avoid them
• Leasehold Valuation Tribunal: Who, what, when, how?
• Tenant Services Authority: What it means for leasehold and shared
• ownership services

They also raised money for Shoosmiths’ outgoing national charity, Shelter, which provides invaluable support and accommodation for homeless people.
