State aid
The State aid rules aim to create a level playing field for European businesses. They regulate the way in which and the extent to which the public sector can provide financial support - in whatever form - to companies. The European Commission has wide ranging powers to investigate and order repayment of illegal State aid - which impacts directly both on businesses and on their public sector partners.
Our team consists of specialist lawyers, trained in the City and Brussels. We provide practical advice on how the State aid rules apply to public sector funding and how projects can be modified so that they comply with the State aid rules. We have experience in dealing with a wide range of State aid issues, including regional aid, aid for research and development, rescue and restructuring aid and commercial investments by the public sector. We advise both public and private sector clients and are used to liaising with the UK government’s State aid department where necessary.
