Shoosmiths has introduced climate-related contract clauses for suppliers identified as having the highest climate impact, marking a practical step in embedding climate considerations into supplier relationships.
The move supports Shoosmiths’ 2040 net zero commitment by helping to address emissions across its wider value chain. With purchased goods and services accounting for 71% of the firm’s carbon footprint, engaging suppliers is an important part of improving transparency, supporting decarbonisation and turning responsible business commitments into practical action.
The climate clauses are designed to strengthen transparency, accountability and engagement throughout the life of a contract, helping suppliers and Shoosmiths work together towards shared climate objectives.
Shoosmiths is pleased to announce that Ricoh, the firm's managed print services provider, has become the first supplier to formally sign and adopt these climate clauses as part of its contractual agreement with the firm. This marks an important milestone in Shoosmiths' sustainable procurement journey. By formalising climate-related expectations within supplier contracts, the clauses provide a foundation for ongoing collaboration on emissions reduction and climate action.
Adapted from Kori’s clause developed by The Chancery Lane Project, the clauses focus on several key areas, including greenhouse gas emissions reporting, climate target setting, transparency around decarbonisation initiatives, the integration of climate considerations into contract reviews, and the cascading of climate considerations through supply chains. The clauses also include provisions to address persistent non-engagement, reinforcing the importance of meaningful participation and transparency.
As Shoosmiths progresses towards its 2040 net zero commitment and responds to evolving client and stakeholder expectations, the climate clauses provide a practical mechanism for embedding climate considerations into supplier relationships and supporting measurable progress across the supply chain. This is intended to be the first of many supplier partnerships adopting Shoosmiths' climate clauses.
