Colleagues from the firm recently swapped keyboards, case files, and court bundles for paint rollers, toolkits, and cleaning supplies to support Nottingham Counselling Service.

The goal was simple: to give the centre a much-needed refresh to their art room and create a more welcoming environment for the people who rely on its vital services. Read Sadia Hussain’s story about her involvement, thoughts from the other volunteers and the benefits of volunteering.
During the day
Over the course of one busy day, we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck into a wide range of jobs. Walls were painted and refreshed, furniture was assembled, rooms were cleaned and organised, and a brand-new art therapy room was brought together from scratch. An additional counselling room and the kitchen were also repainted, and colleagues added their own creative touches to make the spaces warmer and more inviting.
It quickly became clear that lawyers can do far more than just type. While our day-to-day roles focus on drafting, advising, and negotiating, the day was a reminder that we are a resourceful bunch. Stepping away from the desk gave everyone a chance to see a different side of their colleagues and to contribute in a completely hands-on way.
There were plenty of laughs along the way, from figuring out the quirks of flat-pack furniture to choosing colours and adding personal touches to the rooms. But it was also hard work. Painting walls, assembling furniture, and cleaning up after a full day of activity is no small task. By the next morning, many of us were feeling the physical effort, with sore backs, arms, and hands serving as a humorous reminder of just how much had been achieved.
Despite the aches, seeing the transformation in just one day was incredibly rewarding. The difference was tangible. What had previously been tired, worn spaces were now refreshed, bright, and welcoming. The art therapy room in particular stood out as a space that could truly make a difference in people’s lives, a safe place for creativity, expression, and healing.
Thoughts from some of our volunteers
“It was a great day, and a worthwhile opportunity to support a local charity doing positive and meaningful work” – Jamie Passmore (Real Estate, Senior Associate).
“It was really rewarding to be able to support Nottingham Counselling Services in such a practical way. Something as simple as painting rooms and assembling furniture can make a real difference to the space where people come for support, and it was great to work together as a team to help create a more welcoming environment for them” – Sarah Hartley (Trainee Solicitor).
“What a brilliant day. It was so lovely working with everyone involved, opening up conversation and opportunity that simply wouldn't have happened during the normal working day. And to top it off, the end result was just amazing and so pleased to see the happiness and joy on NCS' faces at the point of unveiling. Their gratitude and how we all worked together so collaboratively ensured another charity year together. There are more rooms to tackle!” – Michael Briggs (Employment, Partner).
Final product
The day was more than just a physical effort, it was also an opportunity to reflect on how our skills and teamwork extend beyond the office. We tackled challenges together, shared ideas, and found creative solutions along the way. It reminded us that giving back to the community isn’t just about donating money, it’s about giving time, energy, and care. Although we were tasked with one room, we completed a refresh of the kitchen, a hallway and painted another room. A massively productive day.
This is just the beginning of the project. Further improvements are already planned, including replacing the carpets and potentially refreshing another room, continuing the transformation of the centre and making it an even more welcoming place for staff and clients alike.
Projects like this show the real impact our CSR work can have on the community. The spaces we helped improve will be used by people seeking support during difficult times and knowing that we played a part in creating a more comfortable and inspiring environment is something we can all be proud of.
While most of us returned to our desks the following day a little stiffer than usual, the experience proved one thing: Shoosmiths lawyers are just as capable with paint rollers, toolkits, and cleaning cloths as they are with keyboards and sometimes, the most rewarding work is done away from the office entirely.”
Thank you to everyone at Shoosmiths – a message from Nottingham Counselling Service.
“Seeing people genuinely care: showing up, giving their time, and putting real effort into a space created for people in turmoil and pain — fills me with deep gratitude.
Our clients are already telling us how much they love the space: how peaceful it feels, how calming it is. Saying it has a “wow factor” is honestly an understatement. Some of our longstanding volunteers were visibly emotional, moved by the care our external partners have shown for work that means so much to them.
The kitchen is now clean, fully functional, and working well. Our counsellors have shared how much of a difference this has made — they can relax in the space, and it genuinely feels comfortable and stress-free. That matters more than people realise in an environment where people hold so much for others.
It was a real pleasure to welcome you. This centre has a clear vision and purpose, and your support is helping bring that vision to life.
“Thank you all for your hard work, care, and commitment — it has not gone unnoticed, and it truly matters.”
