In the first video of 2019, Samantha Hope is joined by Janine Esbrand, to talk about Janine’s experience as a trainee and NQ at Shoosmiths, and her business ‘LightBOX Coaching’ which is designed to inspire, empower, and equip parents returning to work after having children.
During the broadcast Janine describes her experience of being a trainee at Shoosmiths including qualifying into a busy corporate team. Janine describes her own transition from Solicitor to having two small children, working as in house legal counsel part time and running her own business ‘LightBOX Coaching’.
The video explores how Janine chose Shoosmiths as a result of the work life balance it promotes allowing her to be successful in her role whilst having time for other things that are important to her.
She describes her training contract as hands on and found it refreshing that she was given real work and was able to frequently work with clients.
Janine talks openly about the late nights and hard work that are needed in the role of a corporate lawyer but advises any future trainees that the workload has peaks and troughs and reassures that in addition to the challenges there is time to enjoy yourself and have a life outside of law.
When Janine started her family she chose to develop her own business and credits motherhood for giving her the confidence to embark on this. She believes many people build a career but then feel they have to put this on hold when they have children. Janine is motivated by inspiring others by coaching and advising them that with the right tools, a career and family life can be combined.
Topics within the video also include shared parental leave, the changing dynamics of parenting and how parents can achieve work-life integration.
