Following Eastleigh Borough Council’s resolution to grant planning permission on 10 April, the Council has today issued the Decision Notice to grant planning permission for the runway extension at Southampton International Airport.
This had been put on hold for the past couple of months to provide the Secretary of State time to assess the case and decide whether or not to call in the application for a public inquiry, which has not happened.
There have understandably been a number of well founded concerns voiced regarding the runway expansion - not least from local residents who live underneath the flight path but also in respect to aviation’s impact on climate change. The Council has been working hard with the airport these past months on a detailed package of mitigation measures including a cap of 3 million passengers per year and enhanced controls on noise and vehicles.
Notwithstanding the above concerns, the airport expansion will undoubtedly be a huge boost for the local economy creating jobs and encouraging investment in our region during a period of post-pandemic recovery.
One day in the not too distant future that "green list" of travel destinations will be a lot longer (or better still, no lists!) and I, for one, am excited about the prospect of better connectivity on my doorstep.
