Growth of the renter

This is an interesting article from Greystar revealing that renters will overtake mortgage owners by 2024. This seems to follow the trend that home ownership is simply out of reach for many people, with house prices rising 20% faster than income. The issue here, however, is whether there is sufficient housing stock in the private rented sector to satisfy the increase in demand.

Research over recent months has confirmed that renting is not just the preserve of the younger generation; we are seeing the private rented sector playing an increasing role in housing later living tenants.

Ideally, we need to see an acceleration of developers and landlord investors acquiring and developing out not only good quality schemes but good quality schemes in suitable locations which will serve the needs of a growing and ever-demanding population of renters.
