HS2's green credentials are on track

A move by HS2 to utilise freight in order to move material to construction sites will save 9,680 tonnes of carbon emissions as well as taking lorries away from roads.

The rail industry holds the envious position as being one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation both for people and goods. But construction of HS2, as with any major infrastructure project, will inevitably mean goods needing to be moved from one place to another.

HS2 is designed to free up capacity on the network for local trains and freight, and so an approach to increase the use of freight in its construction makes perfect sense as well as preventing roads from being clogged up - something that never makes large projects popular with their neighbours.

Long may such common sense decisions continue!
