The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says that the pandemic "has had an impact on the number of prosecutions" in 2021. That statement is true but it doesn't explain why the number of prosecutions has fallen year on year since 2015. Tragically, 31 more workers died at work this year (142) than in 2019/20 (111) and yet the number of prosecutions continues to fall. Is the HSE less keen or able to prosecute? If the pandemic eases in 2022, it will be interesting to see whether the HSE is able to reverse the trend for the first time in many years.
