Climbing the Ranks: Shoosmiths named a top three planning law firm in 2025

Shoosmiths’ national planning team has been recognised as one of the top planning law practices in England, ranked joint third in Planning Resource’s 2025 Planning Law Survey - a significant rise from joint eighth in 2024.

The Planning Law Survey is a respected industry benchmark, based on direct feedback from planning professionals across the sector - including local authorities, consultants, developers, solicitors and officials from central government and national agencies - who are invited to nominate the barristers and solicitors they believe demonstrate best practice.

The rise in the rankings cements the team’s reputation as a powerhouse in one of the most complex and fast-evolving areas of law. The team is recognised for providing commercially focused, forward-thinking advice across a wide range of developments – from urban regeneration schemes to emerging environmental compliance frameworks.

In particular, the team has been commended for its collaborative approach and is recognised for the quality of its client engagement, as well as its ability to take a holistic view that extends beyond planning alone.

Shoosmiths continues to advise on flagship projects across the UK, including the planning agreement for Scotland’s tallest residential building, alongside strategic land, logistics, energy and infrastructure projects.

A standout area of work has been Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), where the team has played a leading role in helping clients navigate the legal and commercial implications of the new regime. Shoosmiths advises on strategy, risk and innovative delivery models within development agreements, helping unlock value while aligning with new obligations. This work has helped shape market direction for the delivery of both on-site and off-site BNG.

Kathryn Jump, partner and joint head of planning said: “The 2025 ranking is a testament to the team’s commercial focus, technical excellence and its role in shaping the planning landscape - particularly in areas such as environmental compliance and critical infrastructure delivery.

“It reflects the depth of trust our clients place in us - to guide them through high-stakes projects with practical, commercially driven legal advice.”

Lisa Tye, partner and joint head of planning added: “It’s been a year of progress and impact. To be recognised among the top three planning law firms is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the team’s depth of expertise and commitment.

“Over the past year, we’ve delivered on complex schemes, adapted to evolving legislation and helped clients unlock value through robust planning strategies. We’ve also contributed to the wider policy conversation, including through our involvement in the Radix Housing Commission, helping shape thinking around planning reform and the delivery of more sustainable and accessible housing.”
