Shoosmiths builds out planning team with new partner appointment in Glasgow

Shoosmiths has further underlined its strategic intent with the appointment of Steven Stewart as partner within its growing real estate division.

Steven will be based in Shoosmiths’ Glasgow office, leading the Scottish planning and environmental practice for the firm, while also supporting clients and colleagues UK-wide.

With significant experience in both contentious and non-contentious planning and environmental matters, Steven will advise Shoosmiths’ blue-chip client base on a range of issues. This includes promoting sites through the development plan process, planning applications, planning agreements, compulsory purchase, energy consenting and environmental permitting.

Steven was previously a director at Burness Paull LLP and head of their ESG offering. He has acted for clients when they require representation at appeal, inquiry or judicial review across sectors including energy, housebuilding, retail and leisure and commercial development.

His experience complements the in-depth sectoral experience of his real estate colleagues who have an enviable track record of delivering business focused results for an impressive pipeline of clients, including across the Living sector.

Barry McKeown, head of Shoosmiths Glasgow office and Head of Real Estate Scotland, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Steven Stewart to our team as a planning and environment partner.  With Scotland’s planning regime under intense scrutiny, Steven’s appointment will further boost our capability to offer clients and our inter-disciplinary teams alike, timely and relevant advice in all aspects of planning and environmental law, ultimately ensuring our clients can deliver on their business objectives.”

Commenting on his appointment, Steven added: “It is an incredibly exciting time to be joining Shoosmiths. The firm has built an outstanding reputation as a forward-thinking, ambitious business with a track record of impressive growth. I’m delighted to be joining a planning team with such a well-established national presence and look forward to contributing to the next stage of its success.”

He commences his new role with Shoosmiths in Scotland on 1 September.
