Embassy Village project

Shoosmiths has been providing pro bono expertise to support the creation of the Embassy Village now taking shape in Manchester city centre.  The purpose-built village will provide 40 homeless men with new homes under Castlefield railway arches.

To mark the project’s progress – and to inspire others to get involved – we partnered with Manchester-based artist and writer Len Grant. Len spent time with residents and supporters of Embassy, capturing their stories through sketches and interviews. The result: a powerful portrait of resilience, community, and second chances.

We hosted a Q&A with Len and Embassy’s co-founder, Sid Williams, in our Manchester office, surrounded by Len’s artwork and the voices of those it represents.

“Living with us is a dress rehearsal for running a home, managing finances and running your life. So yes, the Village is daunting – but exciting at the same time.”
— Sid Williams, Co-founder, Embassy

Sid shared his journey—from art school in the south-east to running a mobile homeless shelter in a repurposed Coldplay tour bus. His work is rooted in lived experience, faith, and a belief that housing is just the start. Embassy’s model focuses on resettlement, mentoring, and life skills—because putting a roof over someone’s head is only part of the solution.

Len’s sketches reveal the human stories behind the headlines: how people find themselves homeless through no fault of their own, and how the right support can help them thrive again.

“Embassy’s resettlement team – part parents, part mentors – do things differently. These stories show it works.”
— Len Grant, Artist and Writer

The final phase of the village is now underway. But to open its doors in early 2026, Embassy urgently needs to raise £350,000 to complete essential infrastructure.

“We still don’t have enough money – but it will come. Where God guides, he provides.”
— Sid Williams
