Shoosmiths’ Leeds office completed an eight-week virtual hike across the USA this summer, from Savannah, GA to San Clemente, CA, in support of Candlelighters.
Passing through 9 States altogether, the virtual route was 2,539 miles, which required the 40 staff taking part to walk 10,000 steps or more every day. Each of them joined one of four teams for the Race and team members monitored their progress individually and collectively though the Big Team Challenge app.
In the end, they absolutely smashed their target, recording 26.6 million steps in total, equating to 11,409 miles (18,361 km) or 45% of the world’s circumference! The average participant’s distance walked was 177 miles (285 km) or 35 miles per participant, per week!
The most prolific walkers deserve a special mention, with Katie Brumfitt winning the individual step count challenge by recording a staggering 1,130,186 steps, followed by Chris Keedy on 1,074,093 steps and Judy Fawcett with 948,666 steps!
All the dedication was worthwhile, because we raised a fantastic £2,052 for Candlelighters, to help children with cancer and their families. David Farnell, our Leeds CR Champion, said: “Covid-19 has presented challenges for all of us, but charities have struggled and it’s been acutely difficult for Candlelighters to provide their pre-pandemic levels of personal support, because of shielding. I’m so pleased that we’ve been able to support them at such a difficult time and very proud of my colleagues for delivering such a great fundraising activity, which brought everyone together, promoting exercise and well-being, at a time when the vast majority of us were working from home.”
