Working for gender equality

Balance is a name that reflects the need for gender balance to be a truly diverse, inclusive, and successful organisation, and the balance that we all aspire to have in our work lives.

Our network is here to provide a community for all, including male allies, that encourages support and champions each other.


We aim to do the following:

  • To raise awareness of the importance of gender balance across the firm.
  • To advocate for all women and help them cope with both career specific and other life challenges so that all women can achieve their potential.
  • To collaborate on identifying and implementing changes as needed to advance and achieve gender equality and balanced representation at all levels.

Our commitments 

  • We will look to educate each other and the firm on a wide range of issues affecting women in the workplace and potential solutions.
  • We will engage with senior leadership on the same issues to support its efforts to achieve balanced representation at senior levels.
  • We will collaborate with our clients to assist them in their efforts to address these issues and partner with them on our shared goals and initiatives.

    Our network chairs are Fiona Teague and Susie Wakefield.
  • We will engage with wider communities in the legal profession and beyond to better understand gender equality issues more generally and contribute to collective change for all.
  • We will work with Shoosmiths other employee networks to raise awareness of matters of intersectionality.
